Spelling and Grammar disabled?

Jack Hogg

Out of nowhere the Spelling and Grammar seems to have been
disabled.
-And by disabled, I mean the option in the Word preference pane is
grayed.

Is there anyway to remedy this?

Hi Jack,

First, please ALWAYS give your OS and Word/Office version numbers when
posting.

Next, do you mean that when you open Word's Preferences, you can't click on
the Spelling & Grammar tab? Or do you mean that when you go to Tools>
Spelling & Grammar, that selection is grayed out? Or do you mean that when
you try to add a word to the Custom Dictionary, the Add button is grayed
out?

Before posting again, check Troubleshooting Spelling & Grammar in the Word
Help. If you don't find what you need there, post back

I am using Word OS X version 10.1.5 with English language documents in
OS X v 10.2.8. When I click on Word-Preferences the choice labled
Spelling and Grammer is grayed out and not selectable. Inside the
application it does not check spelling or grammer. The dictionary is
available to look up words in, etc. I would like to be able to spell
check. How do I get it to work? I have already tried re-intalling
the Office X software.

I don't know what the cause is, but I'd try

0) Repairing permissions:

Run Repair Privileges (in the ./Applications/Utilities
folder, or download from Apple:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106900

). From the First Aid tab, click "Repair Disk Permissions". Log out
and log back in.

If you re-installed without running Remove Office from the Value
Pack folder on the installation CD, you didn't remove preferences
and other items. If that was the case,

1) With all Office apps closed, delete the Proofing Tools
Preferences file in ~:Library:preferences:Microsoft (where ~ is your
home directory). Start Word - is the spelling preference back?

2) If not, with all Office apps closed, rename the Microsoft
preferences folder. Start Word - if the item is available again, you
can copy items from your renamed folder to the new Microsoft folder
a few at a time to restore preferences that weren't corrupted.

3) If not, if you didn't use Remove Office before, run Remove Office
now, reinstall and re-update. Repair permissions after updating.

Hi Max:

You need to ensure that the language you wish to use is:

1) Installed in Mac OS

2) Enabled

3) The dictionary for the language you wish to use is installed

4) The text in the document is marked with that language.

All four things must be true, or your ability to add or spell will be
unavailable.

Hope this helps
