Spelling and Grammar option is gray, doesn't spellcheck

I'm using office 97. The spellcheck no longer works (it doesn't spell ro
grammar check anything... no highlights and no help when i press "Spelling
and Grammar"). When i go to change the settings in the Tools > Options tab,
the Spelling and Grammar tab in the box is gray, and doesn't do anything when
clicked.
