spelling and grammar status

M

Michael Byrnes

I am working on a fairly long doc (about 500 pages) and am increasingly
noticing that it is taking longer for two actions to complete:
1. As I type, the cursor suddenly disappears or blinks irratically, the
bottom spelling and grammar icon seems to be animating, and for a few
seconds the keyboard does not function. After the s&g icon seems to stop
animating, I can go back to typing. This happens every several minutes. I
have turned off grammar checking and autobackup is set at 20 minutes. Word
2002, sp2.
2. I added a 'Box' caption type. The longer the doc, the longer it takes
for the caption to appear once I have entered a title for the box.

Any help to speed this up a bit would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Automatic repagination will dramatically slow the editing of long documents.
You can speed things up by using normal view (with repagination switched off
from tools > options) and only switch back to print layout view when the
document is nearly complete.

Note there is no timed autobackup facility in-built into Word. It is
*autorecover* information that is timed and its value is rather hit and
miss. Don't rely on this as your sole means of disaster recovery. Set Word
to create backup files and save regularly. There is a Save Reminder macro in
macros9.dot supplied with some Word versions or downloadable via a link on
the favourites page of my web site that can be configured to save the
document at timed intervals - or will remind you to save manually.
