Spelling and Grammar

Hi

I am using Microsoft Office Word 97 pro on Windows XP pro SP2. Word is not
checking my spelling and grammar. I went to Tools > Options > Spelling &
Grammar tab to see whether anything is disabled or enabled. I found that
all the options under "Spelling" are greyed out. All of them are unchecked
except "Hide spelling errors in this document" which is checked. How can I
"de-greyed" them out to be able to make the changes I need ?
