In Word 2007, click on Review tab | Proofing | Set Language | <choose
your language> | uncheck the "Detect language automatically" and "Do not
check spelling or grammar" boxes | Default | OK. Then press F7 to rerun
spelling and grammar checks, and save the document.

Oops... sorry, I left out a step... In Word 2007, open the document that
has this problem, press Ctrl+A to select all of the text, and click on
Review tab | Proofing | Set Language | <choose your language> | uncheck
the "Detect language automatically" and "Do not check spelling or
grammar" boxes | Default | OK. Then press F7 to rerun spelling and
grammar checks, and save the document.

the problem is not just with 1 document. even when i create a new document, i

You will need to repeat the process in existing documents. New
documents you create from this point forward should not have this
problem unless you copy and paste from an existing document that does
have this problem.

I didnt copy and paste from another document. If I create a new document and
start typing, it still wont identify errors.

When you "just did that", you *did* click on Default, correct? And when
you "just did that", did it fix the problem in the document you had open
at the time? And you said "yes" if you were prompted to save changes to
your Normal.dot template, correct?

In a new document, type a misspelled word that is not identified as
such, select the word, and check to see whether it is the language that
is incorrect, or if it is the "do not check" attribute that is incorrect.
