Spelling errors not marked in unprotected part of form

I have created a form for our office's process of writing and distributing press releases. The first page (section 1) is the form part, where dates and recipients are entered/checked and the second page (section 2) is an unprotected area where the actual press release is written. I have triple-checked to make sure that only the first page is protected and that the "Check spelling as you type" option is checked, but spelling errors on that second page are never marked with the squiggly line. The second I unprotect the form portion, the squiggles show up on the second page, though. Am I doing something wrong, or will the spell check just not work on a document with a protected section?

I tested this situation and was able to reproduce your results. It appears
that you are doing nothing wrong. Word X is not performing as expected in
these circumstances. However, I did find that by choosing Spelling and
Grammar from the Tools menu, Word was able to spell check the unprotected
section correctly. I suggest this method as a workaround.

I will bring this to the attention of our developers.
