Spelling/grammar tools in Word 2004 not working on old mergedocuments

We have numerous old merge documents that originally were created in Word
5.1 for the mac. We have noticed that the spelling and grammar tools are
not working on these document now that we are using Word 2004. We usually
get a message indicating that the spelling and grammar check is complete and
that text set to (no proofing) was skipped. We have tried to change the
default language to English(US) and save those changes, but the document
seems to always revert back to no language being selected with the checkbox
for spelling and grammar containing a dash. We have even tried copying and
pasting the entire document except for the last paragraph mark to a new
document, but that hasn't worked either. Does anyone have a solution to
this?

You also need to get the language for each style to be US English too.
Hop into Format » Style and play from there.

Hi Michael,

I’m not sure if this suggestion would help you, but whenever I encounter a
problem regarding text and styling I copy the entire text and paste it into
Mac TextEdit, then convert it to plain text, and paste it into a new document.

Michael,

I should add – when you paste the text into TextEdit and if nothing changes
that’s a good sign. However, the problem is when you convert the text into
plain text - if you have any special characters in your text they may change.
If this is the case, copy and past the text from TextEdit without converting
it into plain text.

This is a work-around and I hope it helps.
Regards,
Geo
