From time to time the spell check facility disappears

Edit > Preferences > Spelling and Grammar > Check spelling as you type is
checked

I seem to have so many Custom Dictionaries, User Dictionaries, English
Dictionaries, Australian, French and German Dictionaries (which I do not
need) etc, it is very confusing

My own fault for upgrading various programmes without making sure old stuff
was cleared out

Spell check as I type is working in Mac OE 5.0.6

but I do not seem to be able to get it working in Mac Word 2001

Can you give me (and others) a simpleton's guide to making sure the right
dictionaries are in the right place for Word, XL and OE - it would be great
to know where to look when the prob arrises next time

Thanks as always

If you do a Google search of these archives:

http://google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*mac.office*

for articles with spelling in the title and John McGhie as author,
you'll find a number of articles explaining the intracacies of
Word's spelling.

A brief synopsis:

Word's objects (Application, Template, Document, Paragraph Style,
direct format, word, and a few others) all have "language"
properties, and each one above "inherits" its language from the
object to its left, unless you change it. For instance, each word's
language property will be inherited from the direct format language
(if any), which in turn inherits from the paragraph style, etc.

In order for Spelling to be available, the selected text must have a
language applied or inherited that has a dictionary enabled. Note
that "English" is not a dictionary specification - English (AUS),
English (UK) and English (US) are all different.
