I have typed in spike so many times. It was in fact the first thing I did and i am doing it on a regular basis. I really need to be able to collect together text from different places in a document and then paste them somewhere else. I do not them want to go back over the doc erasing those bits I have collecyed. Sounds like a job for spike to me.

Is there a question here? If there is I'm afraid I can't decipher it... Your
statement suggests that you're using Spike on a "regular basis" yet you seem
to go on as though for some reason you *can't* use Spike at all.

If you need clarification on its use:

Command+F3 Cuts selected content to the Spike
Shift+Command+F3 Pastes the content of the Spike

If that isn't what you're asking about please try to phrase your question
more clearly.

I meant I'd typed spike into help as had been suggested and got nowhere. I uded to be a pc man and spike worked there but since I've changed to mac I can't find it. I tried your suggestion and the whole screen dissappears.

Yeah, I'm afraid Spike always has been one of the less publicized features,
but the Help in 2008 is really poor. They're working on it, but a search for
Spike currently produces only one hit referring to Word Keyboard Shortcuts.
You then have to open the Editing Text & Graphics bullet point where you'll
find the strokes for Spike without any documentation on or description of
the feature unless you click the blue name Spike... But it is there :)

All I can say is it works like a charm here: OS X 10.5.5, Office 12.1.3
(12.1.2 at the time I posted the reply).

My first suspicion is that you may be using Spaces - with which Office 2008
is notoriously incompatible. I don't *know* that this is one of the issues &
with just a little messing around I wasn't able to repro the behavior you
described, but the conflicts seem to be somewhat random & varied in the
first place. With any 2008 apps running in Spaces it's pretty much "Anything
Can Happen Day". If that isn't the case perhaps you have some other
background process that's grabbing the keystroke, such as Exposé or another
utility. Check the System Preferences for Spaces & Exposé first.

expose is grabbing the f3 key and nothing I do can make it stop. I've tried de-ticking the boxes. I would mind turning the whole thing off. I'm gonna find life difficult without spike.

There must be some way to do it - as I wrote, I've done it here... I just
can't remember exactly what I did. It can't be all that complex or it would
at least stick in my mind even if I couldn't recall the details.

One thought - Have you restarted Word since making the change in the Exposé
keystroke settings? I'll check further when I get a hold on my MBP - the
system I'm on now is running Tiger & Leopard may be different.

Even if you can't rescue F3 all is not lost - Assign a different pair of
keystrokes to the Spike-related commands. In Tools> Customize Toolbars &
Menus click the Keyboard button at the bottom. Select Edit from the
Categories List then select & assign the keystroke of your choice to the
Spike & InsertSpike commands. The dialog will tell you if the selected
stroke is already used by something else. Just make sure to click the Assign
button once you decide on each keystroke.
