spinning wheel with expansion of abbreviations

Word 2004 frequently displays an endless spinning ball when I attempt to
use Spell Catcher to expand an abbreviation during interactive spell
checking.
The spinning ball does not occur all the time but occurs frequently. No error
log is registered by Word in the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter. I do not
recall this problem occurring with Word v.X and I am only able to exit by
force quitting Word.

I am using OS X 10.3.5

How do I correct this problem?

I use Spell Catcher X but haven't experienced this problem. I have seen
Spell Catcher expansion slow down when Entourage was downloading mail or I
am burning a disk with Toast, but it's just slow and I have never seen the
spinning ball.

Try using "Remove Office". Directions for using can be found here:

If that doesn't work, you might want to consider doing an Archive and
Install of the OS. This might sound like overkill, but in the end might be
easier than trying to track down the culprit.
