Split area codes?

S

straightarrow

Some numbers in several area codes are long distance from me and require a
"1"... some in the same area code do not... how can this information be
stored in the contact folder?

Fundamentally how do I use the automatic dialer in Outlook in this situation?

Using Outlook 2002 with Win98SE.

Thanks in advance for any help,

You don't store it in the Contacts folder. Set up dialing rules to cover this
situation.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I can not figure out how to set up the dialing rules? If I put the area
code into the box indacating a "1" is required... then when I try to dial a
number that does not require a 1... it puts one there? So how do I set up
the rules so that I can choose which number requires a 1, and which one does
not?

I have to use trial-and-error determining which number in a particular
contact will require a "1" and which one will not. Thats why I was hopeing
the information could be stored in the contact folder after the fact. The
wonderful SBC can not give me software or a list that tells which is which.

First, set up a general dialing rule for that area code which will cover how
most of the numbers you dial will be handled, checking (or not) the boxes for:
- Dial [1]
- Include the area code
Then set up further dialing rules, for the same area code, to cover any
prefixes that are exceptions to the rule.

S

If I put the AC in the "Dial 1" box of Area Code Rules, all numbers to that
area code have a "1" apended. If I do not put a 1 there... no numbers to
that AC will have a 1. How do I do both?

Now I am thoroughly confused… Trying to get back to a starting point, I put
AC 214 into to AC box in the modem area of the control panel… I have put the
same AC in the “Dial 1†box of the Dialing Rules… the number 1 is in front of
the phone number in the contact, and showes in the “New Call†box of the auto
dialer… but a "1" is not being dialed so the operator tells me.

If I go back and put a “1†in the AC box in the modem… it works?

Help, please!

(start clean by deleting any existing dialing rules)
- Click "New"
- Select "United States" in "Country/Region" menu
- Enter "214" in "Area Code"
- Click on tab "Area Code Rules"
- Click on "New"
- Select "Include all the prefixes within the area code"
Now determine what your general dialing rule is for area code 214, that is
how most numbers are dialed,and:
- Check (or uncheck) "Dial:" (and if checked, enter "1")
- Check (or unecheck" "Include the area code"
- Click on "OK" to save the dialing rule
You've now set up your general dialing rule for area code 214. Now set up a
dialing rule to cover any prefixes that are exceptions:
- Go back to "New" under "Area Code Rules"
- This time create a rule by selecting "Include only the prefixes in the
list below"
- Click add and enter any prefixes that are dialed differently, and:
- Check (or uncheck) "Dial:" [1]
- Check (or unecheck) "Include the area code"
- Click on "OK" to save the rule.
Now you have your general dialing rule for area code 214 and prefix
exceptions and everything should work.

Well, the Dialer is part of the operating system, not part of Outlook -
Outlook merely makes use of it. It's been a long time since I've seen
Win98SE, so I'm sort of flying blind here. Under "Area Code Rules", you need
to figure out how to specify :
- whether or not a "1" should be dialed; and
- whether or not the area code should be dialed

Maybe someone still familiar with Win98SE could step in with some guidance
here?

I looked at an image of the Win98SE dialer and I see that it's much more
limited than the WinXP dialer. The Win98SE dialer doesn't allow you to set up
dialing rules with anywhere near as much specificity as does the WinXP
dialer. In particular, you can't set up prefix-based rules ... which
unfortunately is exactly what you need.
