Split Task

Every now & then I notice a split task; however I did not intend for the task
to be split. It has part of the bar on the timeline where I started it, then
a long dash and the completion way out in the future (months apart). I keep
dragging the left bar back & rejoin. I am not using resource leveling. Is
there anything else that might be causing the split?

Hi Nick,

The "Update Project - reschedule uncompleted work" command will
create a split in a task. The actual completed work will stay as
completed and any incomplete work will be scheduled in the future.

There is also a split task button on the toolbar. It's possible you
are hitting that by accident.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Are you on Project Server?

Are you using any of the tracking options (Tools/Update Project ...)?

Just getting back to this now.

Where do I find the "Update Project - reschedule uncompleted work" command ?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Nick,

Well, you can also split a task through the Edit > Split task
command, through the toolbar button, or through the shortcut menu.
Sorry, but I don't know of any other way to create a split other
than those mentioned.

Look in the Tools/Options menu, Calculation page, and see if the checkbox
"Move end of completed parts after status date back to status date" is
checked ON. As an example of what this will do, imagine a 10 day duration
task A starting Monday March 30, linked to 10 day duration task B starting
Monday April 13 and ending Friday April 24. We are at the end of the first
week, April 3 so that's our status date. Mark Task A 50% done. AND we've
jumped the gun and actually managed to get 2 days of work done on Task B so
mark it 20% done. What will happen is the first 2 days of B will jump back
to show work was done on Thursday and Friday of this week(yesterday and
today). This only makes sense because we lack a time machine to go do work
ON April 13 and 14 when it's only just now April 3. The schedule will show
task B split with a gap extending out to its original start date of April 13
where the remaining work is scheduled to pick up again and now finish on
April 22.

L&G,
I have noticed that if a task has pred or succ and has an actual start,
sometimes it will split when you add a % or status it in some way. If it
already has an actual, remove the pred/succ and then you can status it.
