spliting a cell and lose some of the text

I am working in word, using tables. The text was converted to a table. When
I split a cell, I lose some of the text - seems to be the text that is at a
tab location. Is there anyway to split the cell without losing the text or
do I need to remove the tabs?

Hi,

The 'problem' might only be that the tabbed text has wrapped to an area
below the visible cell boundary. If you increase the row height it may
(should) still be there.

Or, if you split the cell horizontally, that the tab is to the right of the
new right margin.
