Spliting a task with dependency on another

S

Saad Kanawati

Hello,
I have one task from date A to date D that is assigned to a person.
This person has to perform another task from date B to date C (i.e. in the
middle of the first task).
This person wll eventually be working overtime from B to C dates and has to
be levelled.
How can I adjust the first taks to split it to two sections, A to B and then
C to D that can be dependent on the second task without having to create two
separate tasks out of it?

A variation of this:
The first task is performed by three people. The second is done by only one
of them. How can I put this while keeping the first task as one task?

Thanks

Saad

Hello Saad,

For manually leveling the resource in your first scenario, you will most
likely find the Resource Usage view to be the easiest to work with.
Enter in both tasks setting the appropriate predecessors and successors
to each task.

Assign the resource to both tasks and then display the Resource Usage
view. You can manually edit the work of the first task, stopping it by
placing zeros in the period of time of the second task.

For your second scenario, try the same idea with the Task Usage view.
Assign the three resources and manually edit the work.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Julies for the reply. It was helpful but not completely.
I was looking for a way where if the second taks (from B to C) got a delay,
the remainder of the initial task (from A to D) will be automatically updated
rather than me going manually to the resources sheet and changing the hours
every day for every change.

Hello Saad,

You're welcome for the assistance and thanks for the feedback.

The only way to accomplish what you seek in initial planning is to
either create two separate tasks and then set the first as the
predecessor or to use resource leveling to delay the remainder of the
first task until the resource becomes available.

If you are concerned more with a change in schedule due to work on the
second task being extended you could use the option "Reschedule
uncompleted work to start after" which appears in the Tools > Tracking >
Update Project command.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
