splitting a single individual cell

Most likely it is, whats in the cell and how do you want to "split" it?

Data > Text to Columns does that, although Mid(), Left() and Right()

No, I don't want to split the data over 2 columns. You know how you can
merge 2 cells and then unmerge them to go back to the original 2 cells? Is
it possible to split one cell into two cells if they have not yet first been
merged?

It still sounds to us like you want to split the data over 2 columns.
Perhaps you need to give us an example of what you want to do, and why
Data>Text to Columns won't do what you want.
