Splitting Database

I keep reading about splitting access databases into front and back end but
have no idea how to do this. I have created a database for use to track
tenders and contracts within our organisation but it is becoming slower with
each record added. Could anyone explain in a step by step way how I can do
this? I use access 2002 and the operating system is xp.
