splitting the task only lengthens the bar

When I try to split a task on the Gandt chart the bar only
lengthens and does not show the split. I have
successfully split tasks on this document for weeks and
now it doesn't work correctly. I realize software does
not operate randomly but, to my knowledge, I have not
changed anything although something must be different.
What could it be?

Hi John,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Format/Layout/Show bar splits.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

The "show bar splits" checkbox is checked and yet the bar
splits are not shown.

I am not assigning any resources. I am entering units in
hours. My project calendar is 24-hours. I am using MS
Project 2000 (9.0.2001.0219 SR-1).

Hi John,

Have a look at the Task Usage view and check for zeros where the split is
occurring. You could try deleting and re-inserting the offending tasks.

Otherwise, we need to discover whether your project is at fault, whether it
is Project at fault, or whether it's your PC. Does the symptom occur with
other projects on this PC? Does it occur with this project on other PCs?
Does it occur with other projects on other PCs? Does your backup (you do
have one don't you? :) ) have the same symptom?

The task usage view shows the correct number of hours for
the task but the bar still spans a larger number of
continuous hours. I have successfully displayed this
document on other computers and it works fine. On my
computer the splits show up in old tasks that were created
before I encountered this problem but new tasks do not
display splits correctly. This is not specific to any
document on my computer but it seems, thus far, to be
limited to my computer. I have even uninstalled and
reinstalled Project on my computer but without any change
in this problem.
