Spooler SubSystem application error

I am also having a problem with this Spooler SubSystem application error -
with two different brand new printers, although each has had its own
manifestation of the problem.

I have an HP laptop which I bought in August. It's got Windows and Office
2007. Printer - Lexmark X4690. I go to print something, and it'll usually
print fine. Then I'll print something else, and it won't print, and not
allow anything else to print. I have to restart the computer to print
anything else.

What's wrong?

It's due to the Lexmark printer driver: utter garbage. You need to raise
this with Lexmark support.

Terry -

First of all, THANKS for responding!

One thing I forgot to mention (we'll see how this changes your answer) -
it's a wireless printer. I keep it below the desk the computer sits on. I
know that the connection itself is working OK because it DOES print --- it's
just that it prints ONE thing, and that's it!

Also....this is the second printer! How could I have possibly received TWO
botched "printer drivers", as you said? Sure it couldn't be something with
my laptop?

Wireless makes a difference. After printing one document and then a second
document that fails, open the Printer Properties (through the Control Panel,
Printers applet) and send a test page to the printer. Does that work?

Terry,

Well, I did the test page, and the printer has been working fine this
afternoon.

Did you expect running a test page to actually repair a problem?

I'll let you know if something is still wrong. Thanks so much!

It was a diagnostic test to see if it was Word or the Printer driver that
was at fault. I had not expected it to resolve the problem. I'm not that
clever!

OK, well, I'll see how it behaves tonight and tomorrow, and I'll be writing
your way if the problem persists.

Ok, Terry. Problem IS persisting. What is the deal?

There were a few times when the Spooler SubSystem error would come up, I
would close it, and then 2 minutes later, my job would print. Not the case
anymore.

Oh - forgot to mention that if I restart my computer, backed-up printer jobs
will print out as the computer turns back on.

In case that helps.

Keep in mind....wireless printer.

This must be a printer driver/wireless problem. Test by connecting directly
to the printer to see if the same problems exists. If it now works
consistently, it suggests that the wireless link is being broken after a
single print run.

Terry - Took your advice, tried printing with the USB cable connected from
printer to computer. Nothing.

Here's the cycle I'm picking up on after turning the computer on -

1. Print something - fine.
2. Print something - usually fine.
3. Press print - SubSpooler App.
4. Press close; document prints a minute later or so.
5. Try to print something - nothing.

What now? THANKS!

Take printer back as the driver is obviously rubbish.

But I've ALREADY sent a printer back and received a new one! Same problem!
Don't you think there may be an issue with the computer itself?

It is very difficult to be precise when diagnosing a problem from a
distance, but because you can print once and then it stops, it suggests a
problem with the printer driver. We know it isn't Word because you cannot
send a test from the Printers and Faxes dialog either without restarting. Is
it possible that you could borrow another printer to test your computer?

Is Windows fully patched up to date with all servicepacks and fixes?

Terry,

1. About borrowing another printer to test - Have already done that. We
had to stay with a family for 3 weeks recently, and I used their printer with
this computer. Worked fine.

2. About Windows being up to date - Well, bought the computer (AND printer)
at the end of August, and whenever an update has popped up on my screen for
anything, I accept it.

Sorry to keep bothering you about this, but I want to exhaust all options
before officially blaming Lexmark for the product. I even went through set
up with their tech people, and one of them did something (don't know what)
after which he said I wouldn't ever experience the Spooler problem again.
False!

Are there similar problems with wireless printers with HP?

T

Terry Farrell

I cannot say about HP wireless printers: they may be OK and I don't recall
reading any reports of printing problems with HP wireless printers.

This definitely sounds like a Lexmark driver problem. I have never been
enamoured with Lexmark Inkjet printers. I've always found Canon Inkjet
printer by far the best but I a have no experience with wireless printer as
I won't have wireless because of security issues, so I have a wired CAT5e
network.
