Spreadsheet disappears when opening Toolbox

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Sometimes, but not always, when I open the Toolbox, the spreadsheet I'm working on disappears like it's going into a "crack in the wall". If I close the Toolbox and click on the Excel icon in my dock the spreadsheet reappears.
Open the Toolbox again and the spreadsheet disappears again.
If I restart the computer the problem goes away for this spreadsheet, but may reappear on another spreadsheet at a later date.
Any thoughts on the cause and corrective action?

Yes - Turn of the OS X feature called Spaces with which Office 2008 is
notoriously incompatible.
