Spreadsheet suddenly changes format as I type

I'm using Excel 2003. I have a long spreadsheet. I have shaded the previous
rows in grey. Suddenly when I go onto the next row the cells shade
themselves grey automatically as I type. This does not always happen and I
don't want it to happen (I type the cells without shading and shade rows to
show that certain tasks have been completed). Also, the font will suddenly
change to a smaller size. I've looked at the Format Style and that is as I
want it (font 10, no shading).

I've never seen this happen before in other versions of Excel. What is
causing it? How can I stop it happening?

Thanks

Evelyn

Click on Tools|Options|Edit, untick Extend list formats and formulas.

Alternatively, and that is what I would do, use conditional formatting to
shade rows. In that case, list formulas and formats will extend, but rows
will only shade once a condition is met.
