spurious line breaks + print preview crashes

I have recently bought word08 on mac (French language). I have a problem when working on document with several pages: while typing text (no figures or tables), word adds page breaks without any reasons sometimes one line after the preceding page break. Sometimes the page break is automatically removed: its presence seems driven by the fact I time carriage returns, but I am not sure. Note that the problem occurs even when removing automatic corrections, and single lines prevention.

Moreover, when the problem occurs, print preview crashes when I try to have a look to the page next to that of the abnormal page break !

Let me say that this bug is very very annoying, making it difficult to use word to edit even the most simple texts !

Advices and bug correction would be appreciated.

Best regards

Eric

PS: one thing of importance may be the fact that I cut/pasted text from previous version of word running on PC ?

Just one thing I have just tried: the piece of text where the problem occurred was copy/pasted from Windows Word document. I have copy/pasted this area using special paste: text only, and now the bug seems not occurring again.
One hypothesis would be that copy/paste from PC documents contains a bug?

One thing you've neglected to specify is the update level of Office. Make
sure you have the latest updates applied, repair disk permissions on the
Mac, then shut down & start up after a minute or two.

If this is happening in only the one document it's possible that the content
you copied was corrupt in some way. I'm not aware of any such "bug", so if
the problem continues reply with any additional detail you can provide.
There are some diagnostic & corrective actions that may help if the cause
can be identified.

Hi Eric:

I don't think this is a bug, I think this is the normal operation of certain
formatting properties.

Unless you have disabled Word>preferences>Autocorrect>Autoformat as you
type>Define styles based on your formatting, Word will be automatically
applying styles to your text whenever it guesses that you are typing a
heading or a list.

Styles have formatting properties: one of which is "Page Break Before" and
the other is "Keep With Next".

Either of those will produce inexplicable "page breaks" if you do not know
what's happening.

If you apply "Heading 1" style to a paragraph, and your Heading 1 style has
"Page Break Before" turned on among its properties, then you will get a page
break before each Heading 1 paragraph. The cure is to either turn that
property off in that style, or use a different style.

If you have "Automatic Bulleted Lists" and "Automatic numbered lists" turned
on in that Autoformat dialog, Word may be applying the List Bullet or List
Number styles. If either of those styles has "Keep With Next" set among its
paragraph properties, Word will prevent a page break after any paragraph set
with that style.

Again, the cure is to fix the style or use a different style.

Please lose the idea of "carriage returns". Word does have a carriage
return, but that's not the command you are hitting: you are hitting
"Paragraph Marks". A paragraph mark is a container object that contains all
of the formatting properties for the text preceding it.

On the Standard Toolbar, click the Show/Hide button to reveal the paragraph
marks so you can see where they are, and it will all start to make sense.

Search the Word help for "Keep lines and paragraphs together" and "Define a
style" to get a better idea of how this mechanism works.

I suggest that in Word>Preferences Autocorrect>Autoformat as you type, you
turn OFF everything in the top and bottom sections of that dialog. You can
leave the middle section on if you like.

Turning those things off will stop this "Automatically screw up your
document" nonsense from happing and put you back in control.

Hope this helps
