SQL Ed needed for Project Server?

C

Curtis

Hey

Im running a SBS 2003 Premium Box, have just installed Project Server 2003
on it, Project Web Access works fine but connecting via Project Professional
isnt working

The error I have been getting in Project Pro is the following

Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 53
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect())
Connection failed:
SQLState '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or
access denied.

Have used microsoft solution to this error with no luck, does anybody have
any suggestions?

I have heard rumours that the version of SQL Server 2k included with SBS
2003 Premuim doesnt support the enterprise features, do I need SQL Serv
Enterprise Ed to be able to connect to Proect Server using Project Pro?

Any help would be appreciated...

Hey Gary, thanks for the quick reply

I used that guide off SBS Links for the install and it helped me avoid a LOT
of pitfalls,

it was in this guide that it mentioned that the ed of SQL included with SBS
Premuim wouldnt work with Project Server Ent features, I talked with a
Microsoft Gold Certified Engineer and they told me it wouldnt be an issue

Obviosly he was wrong

We are a small business of about 7 staff so we dont want to have to buy SQL
Enterprise Ed (& cannot afford it) We are also in New Zealand so getting
access to a certified MS Project Person is difficult

Looking at past Posts, im wondering if it is a Windows Firewall Problem (We
are on SP2), could windows firewall be blocking port 1433?

Pretty much we need the Project Professional connection features, we dont
mind about not being able to build OLAP cubes and using the portfolio manager
but being able to publish projects via Project Pro is essential...

Any help?

Sorry Earl this is a different Curtis, ill have to see about changing my
Display name...

Hey

I found the problem, in the SQL Instance under servername\sharepoint
properties, clicked the "network configuration" button and added tcp/ip to
the list of allowed protocols

bingo it worked

thanks for your help...

Curtis:

SQL Enterprise edition is not required. Standard Edition comes with Analysis
services, and all features of Project Server are supported in this edition.

Curtis,

You stated that SQL Standard will support all features in Project Server.
Can you, if you know, explain, then, what the difference is with the Analysis
Services that comes with standard edition and the "Advanced" Analysis
Features for OLAP and the "Comprehensive" Analysis Services that are only
available with the Enterprise Edition? Do they impact Project Server and its
"full" functionality? If yes, how.

Thank you in advance for your assistance

-Eleanor
