SQL Error encountered during MS Project logon

Haris

Hi,

When a PM of my organization attempts to open MS Project 2003, following
error is displayed after entering the login information:

---------------------------------------

Connection Failed:
SQL State: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 53
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Connection Failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or
access denied.

-----------------------------------

What's causing this? Any help would be appreciated.
Looking forward.

Haris

I would say based on this error message that the does not have connectivity
to the SQL server. Likely causes could be a firewall or router that is
blocking port 1433 but allows port 80. The login to project server occurs on
port 80 but the connection to the SQL database occurs on port 1433.

Hope this helps

Thanks, but what if starting Project Pro works and SQL Profiler reports
valid activity (calling of sp's etc) from the client, but saving projects
generates the "Access is denied"-message per above?

Best,

Andy

Andy, Ray:

Thanks a lot for your help. The issue is basically because Project Server is
being accessed from a remote location using VPN. So whenever the user tries
to opn/save a project or connect to MS Project 2003, it attempts to log on to
the ODBC Database using the default login/password. If the user gives the
Project Server DB login info, it works fine, but keeps popping up such errors
and the user has to enter the login info again and again.
Is there a way to set it up to automatically use the project server login
information?
Any information in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward.

Haris

Haris:

If the remote user is using XP Professional, use the manage passwords
feature to make certain that the correct credentials are always passed to
Project Server.
