It is in fact a 'Desktop' engine, so it shouldn't be networked. SQL Server would be the preferred solution, but will has greater hardware and maintenance requirements. Another possibility is MySQL, which is much cheaper (or free depending on how you are using it). Unfortunately, I have no direct experience with this.
