What you're probably seeing is the brackets that surround a bookmark
assigned to an item.
If you don't want to see the brackets, do the following:
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the View tab
Clear the Bookmarks check box and click OK
A bookmark is specific, selected item (text or a graphic) or a specific
location (i.e., no text or graphics selected) in a document that you name
and mark for future reference
If you assign a bookmark to an item, the bookmark appears in brackets ([.])
on the screen. If you assigned a bookmark to a location, the bookmark
appears as an I-beam. The brackets do not print.
You can use bookmarks to:
1. Quickly go to a specific location by means of a hyperlink
a. A bookmark in a Word document can be used as a destination for a
hyperlink in another Word document; when you click the hyperlink in the 1st
Word document, the other Word document opens at the location that is
specified by the bookmark
b. A bookmark in a Word document can also be used as a destination for
a hyperlink within that same document
2. Go to a specific location without using a hyperlink (Go on the Edit
menu)
3. Create cross-references
4. Mark page ranges for index entries
5. Name selected text that can then be inserted into other Word documents
etc.
