square symbol when wrap text is unselected (Excel)

when i unselect the wrap text function, so that everything is on one line, i
get a little square symbol in my text where the line break was. does anyone
know what i need to do so the symbol is showing. i'm thinking that it has to
be a setting feature that i'm not aware of.
