squared boxes instead of letters

I have Windows XP. I have a .rtf file whose size of file is 510KB & I work on
this file
every day. Yesterday I was working on the same file when suddenly power went
off & my PC shuts downs. When power resumed, I turned on my PC, which turned
smoothly without showing any error of any sort. When I logged into my
account, I opened that file & found squares instead of letters. There are
only squares and nothing but squares. When I hit keys of keyboard, letters
appeared where the cursor is & I can insert or copy any text from any other
text file. It appears as it is. But the text I had on that file before power
failure is all squares now. When I copied that squared text in Word 2003, it
also appeared as squares in Word 2003. When I pressed ctrl+A & tried to
change font, the squared text remained as it is. Only size of the square
changed.

I'm not sure why you think this is a Word application error.
What program do you use every day to edit the .rtf file (hint:
the answer is probably not Word 2003)? Why don't you ask in a
newsgroup devoted to whatever program that is?

Also I don't think its a Word application error. I think that Power Failure
caused my 510KB file a sort of error that characters are displaying as they
should. Every other text file in my PC is working fine & I can edit it
without any problem. But only this .rtf file is not working.
I only want to know that is there something I can do about it or should I
just forget it?

Plz Help Me Here.

I think this will work:

Open the document in Word 2003. Immediately save it under a different
name. This is a precaution to avoid losing the original.

Get the font repair macro and install in Word 2003. (It was written for a
different use but will be useful here, I think.) Open the newly-named
document. Run the macro. After running it, you will have to change the
font formatting back to what you want or need.

After you finish fixing the file, you can delete the original, damaged
file and rename the fixed one to the old name if you wish.

Macro here:

Hi Tom,
Unfortunately the Office 2000 CD I got is damaged & I can't install Word
2000 on my PC. Isn't there any font repair macro for Word 2003 or Word 2004

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you can use this one. It will run
correctly on Word 2003 since they both use the same macro language, Word
Basic for applications.

Let us know.

Hi Tom,

I have downloaded the macro file you told me. Its name is EEFonts.exe & size
is 227KB. But when I double click it to run, it showed this msg:

Setup has detected that you do not have an Office 2000 family product
installed on this machine. Before this download can be installed you must
first install an Office 2000 family product. To find out which products are
part of the Office 2000 family, go to
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/info/o2kprods.htm

The website mentioned in this msg, does not exists & I was automatically
directed to the Office main website.

Plz Advice.
