SR-1 Update

Bill Mitchell

Looks like there are many issues with this update. I
just purchased Office 2003 and when I went to the upgrade
it told me to download SR-1 and run it first them I could
run Service Pack 3 (Which I sent for the disk to get
Service Pack3) Well every time I try to run SR-1 it gets
to a point in the set up that is says for me to insert
the Office 2000 Premium disk so I install the only disk I
have Office 2003 but it keeps coming back saying it can
not find a file "DATA1.MS1". I have searched both my
hard drive and the disk. This file is no where to be
found. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Bill

Hi, Bill,

The Office Update is trying to update some remaining Office 2000 components
on your machine. Did you ever have Office 2000 components installed on the
machine? Where they pre-installed, or did you have an original CD? Can you
provide that CD when prompted?

This is my kids computer and it came with some software but no disks. I purchased the Office 2003 full edition not the upgrade thinking it would be complete and better. Any suggestions how to get this upgrade in so I can install the Service Pack 3.

Hi, Bill,

There is no SP-3 for Office 2003. The SP-3 is for Office 2000. The Office
Update site is detecting your previous version and attempting to update it.
There are some things you can do to mitigate this.

If you want to bypass the automatic detection of updates, then you can go
directly to the Office Downloads site and download and install updates for
Office 2003 yourself.

If you want to avoid getting further Office 2000 messages, because there's
nothing you're using from the Office 2000 installation, you might want to
run a new utility for Office 2000 which mitigates the need for original
installation disks when applying updates. Be aware that you need to have
Windows Installer 2.0 and the Office SR-1a service release installed in
order to use this update.

If that's not possible, you can contact the original equipment manufacturer
(who pre-installed your previous version) and request installation disks
from them. They are responsible for supporting what they install. Plop that
CD in your drive whenever you're prompted for Office 2000 disks.

If that's not working for you, the third thing you can do is to remove the
Office 2000 installer data from the registry using the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility. Be aware that this won't remove any Office 2000
components, just the Windows Installer data. If you are running Office 2000
programs, you'd need to re-install them using the CDs. However, this should
un-confuse the Office Update site, because it will no longer see that Office
2000 is installed.

Hope that gets everything straightened out.
