SSN Verification

I think I read that there is an algorithm to test that a social security
number has a valid construction and checksum.

Is anyone aware of this and has a to help ensure that it entered correctly?
I'm not looking for who the SSN# belongs to, I'm already being fed that on a
case by case basis.

No checksum on the American SSN. There is one on the Canadian SIN.

So Canadians can only SIN in a governmentally approved manner? Boring.
