Stalled scrolling in Word with scroll wheel

Markus M

I recently got a quad core G5 with 2GB of RAM--fast machine. I decided
to upgrade to MS Word 2004 while I was at it.

I am appalled to find out that every so often, as I scroll up and down
a simple document, the scroll wheel of my Logitech mouse becomes
unresponsive. As soon as I click anywhere in the document, the prior
scrolls are executed, but I could wait 10 minutes and if I do nothing,
then there will be no response.

So it is not an issue of slow response or slow system--it is NO
response. If that's not a bug, what is? This occurred using either the
Logitech-supplied drivers or with USB Overdrive. It does not occur in
Excel. It was enough to make me switch back to Word v.X immediately.

I was also shocked to learn that this bug has been around since at
least last March, according to posts here.

Microsoft, please fix this glaring bug!!!

Also, in the process I noted that Word 2004 will often commandeer
65-100% of my CPU (according to activity monitor) even when nothing is
apparently going on. I would have to think this is not normal behavior.
Again, Word v.X does not do this.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hi Markus,

Did you fully update Office 2004 after installing it? I believe there were
some improvements made to scrolling in one of the updaters, though I'm not
positive of this and it may not fix your particular problem anyway. Sorry
my memory is not better, but be sure you're fully updated regardless.

HI Beth,

Thanks for your concern. Yes, everything was fully updated. This is a
clear problem with the current version.

I wish there were a fix because this one bug renders the program
unusable at least for me as I like to use the scroll wheel to make my
way in documents.

By the way, I found out that Microsoft will only accept reporting of a
bug by regular mail!! They have no way to report a bug via email,
internet or even by phone. Imagine!

Hi Markus -

You might want to take a look at Apple Discussions, where you will find
further info on the issue & perhaps one of the suggestions there will
work for you.

I'm not convinced it is a Word 'bug' as I use a MS Trackball Optical
and have not experienced any of the symptoms described by those using
Logitech, Mighty Mouse, USB Overdrive, etc. This is true going back to
OS X 10.3x & the first release of Office 2004.

BTW - This is the best place to report suspected bugs. Not only do the
MVPs have an 'inside track' to forward such information, but members of
the MacBU monitor the ng as well.

Help menu => Send feedback to Microsoft doesn't work for you, Markus?

(But in any case, CyberTaz's comment is correct.)
