Does Microsoft offer a stand alone version of Word 2004 (i.e., don't need to
buy Office 2004 to get Word 2004)? I haven't seen anything about this.

Yes, it does. But it's not a "great" buy, because a lot of the bells and
whistles available with Word 2004 depend on the presence of Entourage.

Given that the "savings" are small, I would suggest that you buy the full
package.
