Standard punctuation turns to combinations of symbols

E

embarc

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Recently when I have opened some Word 2004 files common punctuation marks . . . em's, single quote, apostrophes . . . have become strange combinations of bullets, percent signs, etc., that can't be corrected.

Also, the some fonts do not correspond to the font in the tool bars. Example: on some documents, when I select Helvetica or Arial I get a strange serif font.

Very difficult to depend on.

Thanks in advance.

Check that you are saving the file in .doc format (or .docx format). It
sounds as if you are looking at an HTML file using Quoted Printable
encoding.
