"standard" toolbar falls off the screen

this is a problem that i have encountered in all of the office v.x
programs. when i place the dock on the left hand side of the screen,
the "standard" toolbar is positioned as it should be.

when i place the dock on the right hand side of the screen or at the
bottom, or if i turn on autohide while the dock is on the left hand
side of the screen (ie, when the dock is in any position other than
visible and on the left hand side) then, the "standard" toolbar is
pushed off of the left hand side of the screen. more than half of the
"new blank document" button is off of the screen and so is the handle
bar/close button. which means i can't move the toolbar around and
half that button is gone. and it looks awkward.

i have tried ditching my preferences file, no dice. the problem seems
pretty dynamic. it only occurs when i start an office v.x program
without the dock visible and on the left hand side. and it only
occurs when the dock is NOT visible and on the left hand side.

does anyone know of a fix or workaround for this--other than keeping
the dock visible and on the lefthand side of the screen all of the
time.
