I am having exactly the same problem, but in Excel. In Word the program freezes when i try to activate the drawing toolbar.

Type OPT-F11 to enter the Visual Basic Editor. Type CMD-G to open the
Immediate Window. In the Immediate Window, type or paste the following,
one line at a time, ending each by pressing Return:

Commandbars("Standard").Reset
Commandbars("Standard").Enabled = True
Commandbars("Standard").Visible = True

What version of Excel? If 2008, the first thing to check is the oval button
at the right end of the document title bar. It's an OS X "feature" that
shows/hides the toolbars docked within the window. Also, if there is no
window open the docked toolbars don't display at all.

You absolute star! I had this problem too and was hunting all over the place in preferences and settings. It was driving me insane and now it's fixed. It's all shiny and pretty again and I'm happy. Thank you x
