Standard toolbar has disappeared

Processor: Intel

I have been running Excel 2008 for a few months without a problem but recently 'lost' the standard toolbar. It is ticked in the View-toolbars menu list but is not displayed.
I have read other posts which say to click the oval icon in the top right hand corner - but there is no oval button on my Excel menu bars!
Any help gratefully received as the formatting pallet is cumbersome to use - it frequently is either over part of the worksheet and in the way or half off the screen

Are you sure there is no pill shape button in the upper right corner? See
the screen shot through the link - I put a pink transparent circle on the
pill shape button, each window n a Mac has a button like that. It's on the
main Excel window.

Oh ok in 2004 the toolbar is not docked in your window so thats something
different.
If it's not there and it is checked it may be corrupted preferences, you can
reset all Excel preferences by trashing com.microsoft.excel.plist and the
Microsoft folder from preferences in your user, this will reset all
customized toolbars and also your custom dictionary if you have one.
Make sure Excel is quit before you start.
The file and folder can be found in: Macintosh HD - Users - The folder with
the house - Library - Preferences - look for com.microsoft.excel.plist and
the Microsoft folder and drag them to your trash. Don't empty the trash yet
because then you are still able to restore the files if needed.
Restart Excel and the standard toolbar will probably be back.
