Start in templates directory on network drive

I am trying to setup my "Alternate File locations" to open
from a template folder on a network drive. This template
folder has excel, ppt, and word templates stored all in
the same place. I point Excel to that folder, but when I
open Excel I get errors that it is trying to open ppt and
word templates (wrong file type). Then it opens the first
xlt it finds. I have selected the option to "ignore other
file types" but that did not work. Any ideas on what I
might have done wrong?

The alternate file location isn't meant for templates. It's meant to be used to
specify a folder which contains files that are always opened when excel opens.

There is a "workgroup templates" location that can be changed. But you can't do
it in Excel.

In MSWord:
tools|options|file locations

Or you can get to it via the Office Shortcut bar.

Right click on the office shortcut bar
select Customize
Settings tab
Change the "workgroup templates location"
