Start menu, task bar, icons dissappeared on desk top.

We have Microsoft, Windows XP, Home Edition. The desk top icons and start
menu appear briefly when starting, then they dissappear and only the Dell
back ground desk top shows. Does anyone know where they go and how to get
them back?
