Starting excel replaces clipboard with bitmap

This is driving me nuts. i've got XP and office 2002. if I highlight
and copy something on a web page(or anywhere else), and use clipboard
viewer to check the contents of the system clipboard I can see my
data. But if I open Excel it immediately replaces the contents of the
system clipboard with small bitmap image.

I've tried all the standard ways of turning it off, closing three
times, right clicking the icon in the sys tray etc etc to stop the
office toolbar collecting but to no avail. no matter what I do every
time I start excel I get the same thing on the clipboard. It does not
happen with word. I do not have any add-ins installed at all.

Preferably I would get rid of the office cliboard via a registry hack
all together... its another "feature" I would rather not have.

any help appreciated

Hi Rob,

This has nothing to do with the Clipboard but rather an add-in that
runs when you start Excel. More than likely it is using the clipboard
to add a custom icon to a menu or toolbar item.

This add-in may not appear in Tools/Add-ins but it could be a COM
Add-in. Go to Tools/Customize and on the Commands tab select the Tools
category. On the right locate "COM Add-ins" and drag it to any
toolbar. Close the Customize dialog box and utilize the COM Add-ins
command to view the list of add-ins.

Do you have an add-in for Bluetooth perhaps?

I have got a bluetooth adapter plugged into my pc but don't have any
addins for it installed or available to be installed in excel

I'm afraid I did ... there are no addins (visible) that I can see in
either location. The image is a small, either mobile phone or a radio.

adapter on my box. but i'm certain this happened before i installed
it.

It is an add-in of some sort. Unfortunately these days they are
getting harder to find.

First check Add/Remove Programs and see if there is a separate listing
for the add-in.

If that doesn't work then download the Process Explorer from:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

- Start Excel
- Run the Process Explorer utility
- In the upper pane select Excel.exe
- Locate the "View DLLs" command in the Toolbar (if you see View
Handles then View DLLs is already in use)
- In the lower pane locate the DLLs and see if you can determine which
DLL could be causing the issue. The Description and Company Name
columns may help you out. (Click the Name column heading to sort)
- Locate the path for the DLL in a column on the right
- Once found exit Excel and rename the DLL to prevent it from loading.

Note it is best to rename the file extension rather than the file
name.

If you can not determine if a DLL is needed by the application then
use File/Save As to save a copy of the data as text. Then you can
copy/paste the DLLs from the Notepad for us to take a look at.

Beth,

wonderful.... i've found it ... a blue tooth adapter which loaded a
dll when excel started... bizarre... but what a great little utility
the process explorer is. Thankyou very much for your help. Once again
google groups comes through.. this is a great testament to the web and
communities.
Well done!!

Hi Rob,

Yeah, that is a great utility. I 'discovered' it in another newsgroup
post some time ago. It has come in handy.

Can you give us the name of the DLL? This has come up a lot in the
last few weeks and it would be great to have the file name.

Thanks for getting back to us. :)

It was CSH.DLL, it was loaded as part of a bluetooth driver suite
provided by MSI (www.msi.com) I used MSI drivers for a bluetooth
dongle which didn't work with the supplied drivers and a nokia 6310i
phone plus the nokia phone suite software. The MSI drivers worked
fine but this was the result and obviously took some finding.

hope this cinfo can help some others.

cheers
