starting off

Hi,
I've got MSP Server installed by my IT dept.

I'm about to publish my first plan, which if i'm readin correctly will
'create' a number of resources.

How do I link resources to User ID's and specify passwords - I don't want to
use the windows logon id as we're not on server 2003 and I believe it wont
work.

Can somebody give me some basic help ?

Hanx

You are starting off WRONG with Project Server. Your first step with
resources should be to add them in the Enterprise Resource Pool (Tools -
Enterprise Options - Open Enterprise Resource Pool). Do not enter a Windows
Account for any of them, and the system will create user accounts for each
resource using Project Server authentication. By default, the password will
be blank the first time a user logs into Project Web Access, and the system
will prompt each user to change their password. You can specify the minimum
length for a valid password by clicking Admin - Manage Security - User
Authentication in PWA. Refer to the following FAQ for information on how to
set up an Administrator login account in Microsoft Project Professional:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/CreateAdministratorLoginAccount.htm

Given your inexperience with Project Server, refer to the following FAQ for
information about books and training:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/PS2003Documentation.htm

Hope this helps.

Thank Dale.

I'll check out the FAQ you mention.

only 2 quick points:

1.Whats the difference between users & resources ?
2.From my MSP the option you mention is greyed out ?

1. A resource is anyone listed in the Enterprise Resource Pool. Generally
speaking, when you add someone as a resource in the pool, this means that
resource is available for project work in some capacity. When you add
resources to the Enterprise Resource Pool, the system automatically creates
user accounts for them in PWA. Users are those who have user accounts in
PWA only, but are not in the Enterprise Resource Pool. Your executives, for
example, might have user accounts in PWA, but are not in the pool since they
will not do project work. A best path approach is always to add resources
to the Enterprise Resource Pool first, and then to add additional users in
PWA on an "as needed" basis.

2. You need to follow the steps listed in the first FAQ before you can see
that menu option.

I would strongly encourage you to purchase our company's books on Project
Server, and if you are available, to take our online class in February for
Project Server administrators. The books and the training will save you
untold hours of frustration and will get you started right with the system.
Hope this helps.
