In Startup items I now see one file called workbook.xls

Situation:
Lauch Excel.
A blank workbook come up, just the way I like it A-OK.

BUT new workbooks come up in page view which I don't like.

I can't figure out what to do. thanks!

Sounds like you saved your default workbook as a workbook, not a
template.

To be a default template you need to save it *as a template* with the
name "Workbook" (no quotes, no .xlt, .xls .xlsx, or .xltx extension).
