Status Bar in Excel for Mac

My status bar only displays information in the latest version of Excel for
Mac about 10% of the time. I've downloaded all the latest updates, but no
luck. The bar just shows up as a grey "blank" bar without any info on Num,
Ovr, etc. I especially miss the total display for highlighted cells. Any
suggestions?
