Status Bar problem

E

Erin N

While in the "Normal" view of a document, my status bar
doesn't show the line number (LN) I'm working on. I'm new
to Macs and subsequintly this Word program, so I'm not sure
if there is a glitch with the program, if I need to reset
something, or if there's no line count in the normal view
on everyone's program.

Thanks,
Erin

Hello Erin,

I don't know what version of Word you are using, but here is what Help says
in Word 2004 (I doubt if it has changed much since earlier versions):

INSERT LINE NUMBERS
1. Switch to page layout view.
2. Do one of the following:
€ To add line numbers to the entire document, click Select All on the Edit
menu.
€ To add line numbers to part of a document, select the text you want to
number.
€ To add line numbers to existing sections, click in a section or select
multiple section. On the Format menu, click Document, and then click the
Layout tab.
4. If you're adding line numbers to part of a document, click Selected text
in the Apply to box.
5. Click Line Numbers.
6. Select the Add line numbering check box, and then select the options you
want.

To that I'd add that it's easy to switch to Normal view by keying
Command-Option-n (i.e., hold down both the Command and Option keys, then hit
"n" before releasing them -- "Command" being the usual name for the key with
the apple on). Conversely, Page Layout view is Command-Option-p.

Thanks, Clive,

The problem is actually not that I want to add line
numbers, it's that while I'm working I need to be able to
look down at the status bar to see what line on the
document I'm on. This feature has been on all other Word
programs I've worked with previously and you can use it on
the page layout view.

I am working the Word 2004 for macs.

Thanks again, any information is helpful.

On my copy of Word 2004 it's showing just as on previous versions, Erin, so
there will be a fix!

But let me make sure I have this right: Your status bar is showing, but
shows Page x, Sec x, 1/x [i.e., page number of total numbers], At x cm, Col
x -- but not Ln x before "Col x"? Or is the status bar itself not showing?

The status bar is there, but there is no number after LN or
for the Page -- But both of these functions work while in
the Page Layout view, just not in the Normal view which is
were I prefer to work.

Erin,

Having discussed this with a colleague, I have three further questions: Is
this in all documents? If in one document, could you please describe the
document? (one scenario envisages an all-graphic or all-table document,
because it's likely that this is a pagination issue).

Thanks, Erin -- be assured the function hasn't been removed (I can see line
numbers and page numbers equally in Word 2004, as can others). The mystery
is how it has happened on your machine. It hasn't been reported by anyone
else yet. Because of that, I have one more question (sorry) which may be
relevant: Have you repaired permissions recently? (if not, quit Word, then
go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. Then, after Disk Utility
has done its deed, Shut Down, re-start and open Word. Is the fault still
present?).

And if that doesn't work, please let us know what specific version of OS X

2. Do one of the following:

4. If you're adding line numbers to part of a document,
click Selected text
in the Apply to box.
5. Click Line Numbers.
6. Select the Add line numbering check box, and then
select the options you
want.

To that I'd add that it's easy to switch to Normal
view by
keying
Command-Option-n (i.e., hold down both the Command and
Option keys, then hit
"n" before releasing them -- "Command" being the usual
name for the key with
the apple on). Conversely, Page Layout view is
Command-Option-p.

Is the fault still
present?).

And if that doesn't work, please let us know what specific version of OS X
you are using.

The only documents I work in are text, just typing. I have
tried to work it out in both saved and new documents with
the same results - no line counting in that view. It just
doesn't make sense that microsoft would take this function

Hi Erin,

Try testing your Normal Template and your preferences:

1) Quit Word and navigate to your Normal template which should be in
~/Microsoft User Data/Normal. Rename Normal to something else (like
OldNormal), then relaunch Word. If this fixes the problem but you have
customizations, etc, in OldNormal that you want to maintain, you can use
Organizer to transfer those from OldNormal to the newly-created Normal
template. Then you can trash the old renamed file. To learn how to use
Organizer, see here (if you're using Safari you may have to refresh the page
a couple times):
<http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/WordMac/MacWordNormalTemplate.htm>

If this doesn't fix the problem, quit Word again, trash the new Normal and
rename OldNormal back to Normal.

2) To test your Preference files, quit *all* Office Applications.
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/. Drag to the desktop the
following files: com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist,
com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist and Microsoft Component Preferences. When
you restart Word, these files will be recreated. If all is well, you can
trash the old files. You will have to reset some Preferences and
AutoCorrect settings.

If this doesn't help, you can trash the new files and rename the old ones
back.
