Status Bar

My old version of Word not only showed the page and how many words in the document, it also showed the number of the LINE I was on for each page. I am a novelist and format my manuscripts to be 25 lines per page and I used to be able to see what line number I was on for a given page. Is that no longer available in Word 2008? If it is, where can I turn it on? Thanks.

Under the format menu, select 'format document', then the 'Layout' tab. The
option to show line numbers is in there.

You need to use word in the page layout mode for the numbers to show up.

Hi Barry -

That's about the only workaround, but it isn't what the OP is asking for:)
It actually enumerates the lines in the doc, whereas prior versions just
displayed the information on the Status Bar without having to use Line
Numbering. That (plus a lot of other useful info) has been omitted from the
Word 2008 Status Bar... And there are no provisions for "turning it on" such
as there is in Word 2007.

As said, MS removed it from the status bar, but with luck, Barry's
workaround will help. However, make sure that MS knows you want line
number returned to the status bar. Either:

Use Help | Send Feedback in the appropriate Office app.

Visit the suggestions website:

The more requests, the higher the priority.
