Status Indicators (How do I build a stoplight)

After reading many posts, I am still confused as to how I create simple
status indicators (red, yellow, and green.) All I want to do is create a
drop down list, or radio buttons, that the project manager and team members
may select from. I do not want to connect it to any dates and want to be
able to assign it to tasks and milestones.

I have read about and tried the formulas, etc., but am pulling my hair out.
Please help!
