Stencil Report Wizard

K

kleefaj

Greetings.

The Search for shapes feature in Visio doesn't work for me. It's about
shapes, not words, right?

I see that Microsoft has removed the Stencil Report Wizard
functionality from Visio 2003.

Does anyone know where I can get the Wizard or some replacement for
it? I'd really like to print a catalog of the shapes I have installed
on my machine.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Kleefaj,

You may be developing something...The Stencil Report Wizard may have been
replaced partly by some-other biltin add-ons

try browsing in Tools>Add-Ons>Run Add-On...
Reports...>Inventory.vrd

i am also new with a lot of add-ons in my Visio2003 - diff. from older
versions.

regards,

The "old" Stencil Report Wizard and associated Template (both files zipped)
can be downloaded from here:

(I started a discussion here a while back regarding the old Stencil Report
Wizard, that works fine with later versions, and whether there were
copyright implications in posting a link to where it could be downloaded.

I also contacted Microsoft with that specific question and got back a couple
of gobbledy-gook non-replies that indicated only that MS don't read
questions before responding.

From their gobbledy-gook non-replies I take it that MS sees no problem)

I would be very careful about distrubuting anybody else's software
without their express permission.

Which is precisely the reason I asked MS, with no meaningful response, only
a link to copyright provisions for clip-art.

This Stencil Report Wizard issue was discussed here previously.

My old pre-MS Visio 4.1 Technical had a small add-on "Stencil Report
Wizard.EXE" and associated template "Stndoc.VST". It works well with all
later versions of Visio including Visio 2007 Beta.

I asked in this newsgroup in Nov 06 whether MS would haul me through courts
if I made those two small files available by way of a link posted in this MS
newsgroup. A respected MVP suggested there would be little problem. (I
realise that is not definitive).

I contacted MS (twice) and just got back irrelevant links relating to
copyright of clip-art. Obviously my very specific and explicit questions
were not even read. In my query, I indicated that in the absence of advice
to the contrary, then I would assume that posting of a link to a MS
newsgroup would be acceptable.

After all, the files are useable only by those who are running Visio!

Further, the Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/sampchap/5024b.aspx.
indicates that for Visio 2002, the Stencil Report Wizard will no longer be
included, but "may be available as a Web download". Microsoft clearly
intended the files to be freely available.

Also, copyright law (in Australia) permits reproduction/distribution of
material that is no longer commercially available.

I find the Wizard very useful. Evidently, so also does kleefaj@gmail (the
OP of this thread). And it is, after all, merely a discontinued standalone
component that works with current versions. Anyone who has an older version
of Visio can lift it from the original disc, as I did.

Paddy,

When I try that link it either times out or I get sent to the
100WebSpace.com home page.

Any other way for me to get those files?

Thanks,
Jeff

"A Respected MVP"? Are you sure you posted to the right newsgroup? ;-)

I can not speak for how the mind of the MS legal department works, or if it
does, but as long as your are not raising any major red flags, you should be
okay.

1) Posting the full content of Visio 4 may raise a red flag.
2) Asking for money would raise a red flag.
3) Claiming it is your creation would raise a red flag.

You have not raised any of these flags and you did try to get permission. So
if MS legal comes after you, the most they will do is to ask you to remove
the content, your first born Joey should be safe.

Thanks, John. No Geheimestaatspolizei nor Schutzstaffel nor

Razvedyvatel'noe Upravlenie nor even worse <shudder> MS pit-bull lawyers
knocking on the door to "rendition" me (only Americans could dream up a word
like that) to Guantanamo Bay. Not yet, anyway!
