Stencil shape colors in Visio?

I am trying to create a swim lane-type process diagram in Visio using the
templates provided. Whenever I attempt to drag a shape into one of the lanes
from a stencil, the shape loses its own formatting (colour/text/line style)
and takes on what appears to be that set within the template.

Is there any way to over ride this automated reformatting and to retain the
original shape format?
