I am having what appears to be an all-too-common problem. Word seems to be incapable of selecting the fonts I ask for. When I highlight text and select a font, it changes it to a completely different font.

I have already tried the following at least 5 times (with no Office products running, of course):

Deleted user/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.plist
Deleted user/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.word.plist
Deleted user/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Office Font Cache (12)

I have also confirmed that there are no files from any previous installation of Office.

Per one of the linked documents, I ran the demo version of Font Doctor and manually deleted some 1,400 font files that it identified as having a problem. I deleted fonts and ran multiple scans until Font Doctor gave my fonts a clean bill of health.

After all this, the issue persists. This is definitely a problem with Word, since Apple's built-in TextEdit program has no problem giving me the font I want (perhaps Word is trying to tell me something?).

Any suggestions at this point? I' m ready to give up and buy Apple's Pages program.

Yeah, well I have read your post to the end, but unfortunately you're still
going to have to repeat a lot of steps.

That's because font details are stored in two font caches, one built from
the contents of the other, and both of them reform instantly at various
times such as system restart.

I suspect that the issue is actually caused by fonts that are duplicated or
incompatible, rather than damaged.

Let's begin with the simple stuff. I would start off with FontBook ‹ all we
want to find first are the duplicates. Fire up FontBook and Select
Duplicates. If there are any, then Resolve Duplicates.

Now you need to delete the Font Caches. While no Office programs are
running:

1) Go to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/

2) Delete the file called Office Font Cache (11)

3) Empty the Trash.

Now do a power-off restart: Shut down the computer until the power goes
off, then restart. That runs Unix housekeeping scripts that will clean up
the system and rebuild the font caches.

This might be sufficient to fix your problem. If not, come back, and we'll
work through the rest of it.

I am not sure why the Font menu is such a concern though? If you are using
styles for your formatting, you never need to touch it. You can use
Format>Style to set each style up the way you want it. Check "Add to
template" to store it in your Normal.dotm template, and next time you want
it, it's just one-click to apply it: you never have to touch the Font menu
again.

Cheers

Does the Font Book application list any duplicate font?
You can also use it to scan for damaged fonts actually.
