Still can't print color seps from Publisher 2003

Jimmy

I've tried everything. I've installed the generic ps printer that came with
publisher. I've set it to print to a file. I've set it to the port of our
RipIt machine. I've tried to print them to a PDF. Same thing happens, the
progress bar goes a couple of notches, and then I get the "Publisher has
encountered an error" window and the program crashes. I never had a problem
printing color seps with Publisher 2000. I tried to save the file down to
2000, but it messed up some of the graphics. I'm about to pull my hair out
here!

I couldn't remember what it actually said, so I was going to try to print
seps again, to get the errror code, and now Publisher freezes up on the Print
screen. After I select a printer from the drop down list, if I try to click
the Advanced button, or the Setup button, nothing happens. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del
and it says the program is Not Responding. I'm going to uninstall Publisher
2003 and reinstall it and see if that helps.

I uninstalled Publisher 2003 and then reinstalled it and it's still crashing.

When I go to print, the printer that's automatically selected is Adobe PDF.
I can click on the setup button, or the Advanced button. I go under Advanced
and select print color seps and then when I click the print button, 2 bars go
across the progress bar, and then I get the window saying "Microsoft Office
Publisher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." I click on What data does this error report contain? and the
Error signature contains: AppName: mspub.exe AppVer: 11.0.5525.0
AppStamp:3f255ba1 ModName:mso.dll ModVer: 11.0.5606.0
ModStamp:3f334cce fDebug: 0 Offset: 000d878b

If I change the printer to another device (including the generic PS
printer), Publisher freezes. I can't click on the setup button, or the
advanced button. If I click CTL-ALT-DEL, it says Program Not Responding.

I'm getting frustrated. I've got customers wanting their jobs done and I
can't even get the file to print! I never had this problem with 2000, but if
I try to save the files down to 2000, the layout gets screwed up. I don't
know what else to try.

Your error message shows that you are running an outdated version of
Publisher. Be sure you go to the office.microsoft.com and do the Office
Update and download service pack 1 for Office/Publisher 2003.

I just ran the update and installed all the latest updates to office and am
still getting the same crash. I tried printing color seps to a file, by using
the generic ps printer and I get the following error signature:
AppName: mspub.exe AppVer: 11.0.6255.0 AppStamp: 405f8718
ModName: mso.dll ModVer: 11.0.6360.0 ModStamp: 40d147de

Under File > Print > Advanced Print Settings, if Print Composite CMYK by
default is checked, uncheck it and see if you get the same message.

Does this happen on every printer choice? Do you have more printers to
test to?

I could print seps to all my printers with Publisher 2000, but now with 2003,
I get the "Must print to Postscript Level 2" message. Right now, I've got the
generic postscript printer and Adobe PDF that I can print to that are setup
as Postscript Level 3. The file I'm trying to print is an 1-sided 11x17,
2-color job.

I'm running XP on an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+, running at 2.0 GHz with
512 MB of RAM. When I print, I get the window asking me to name the
postscript file that I want it saved as, then I get 2 bars of progress and
then the error window pops up. I can print the job as a composite to any
printer with no problem, but it will not let me print seps.

Let me do some more research. BTW, what is the size of the file?

Ok. I created a new document. Created a box filled with one color with a line
around it of another color. Printed the color seps to a file using the
generic postscript printer and it worked. I copied one half of the 11x17 file
that I'm having problems with and pasted it into the new document. Printed
the color seps to a file and it worked. I then changed the new document to
11x17 and pasted in the rest of the original document. Printed the color seps
to a file and it crashed again. The computer's got plenty of RAM, why would
8.5x11 print, but not 11x17?

Hi,

I do not know for sure, but I had it in the past the same way.
Try to print the whole page on A3 or settings like free size ( custom size
page dimentions) , put in the size there with a little bit more around it.
I noticed that sometimes if the document is to tight at the border, it will
crash also.
I started with those sizes thanks to this forum one year ago.
Every time it crashed, but after rezeizing ONLY the paper size in the
printer, the problem was salved.
Go to File/Print/
In the printer Click properties
in the middle: Paper quality, then paper size, then Postscript custom size
page dimensions. add in millimeters aprox20 extra for both and see what the
result is.
Hope this will help,
It did work for me.

Just to be sure, did you set the page size in the generic printer driver
to tabloid as well?

Yep. I'll try enlarging the page a little like Karel suggested and see if
that works. I just emailed you the .puz and the unpack.exe files. I couldn't
email the original 8 page file, because of file size.
