still looking for solution to Outlook 2007 hangs and freezes

T

tjm

I've been using various versions of Outlook for more than 10 years. I've
never had a problem like this until upgrading from 2003 as part of a general
Office upgrade. Whenever it is sending and receiving it freezes the entire
computer - a quad-core Vista Home Premium box with 3G RAM. Sometimes the
freeze will last as long as two minutes. sometimes I have to kill Outlook
process to get going again. Everything else on the computer works perfectly.
Outlook did, too, until the upgrade. I've done all the file name changes, new
profile, etc., Only add-ons enabled are search index and connector. Main
e-mail account is a POP3. Secondary is MSN.

I made the new profile after the upgrade.

Is the problem constant or intermittant?
Have you tried booting the PC into Safe Mode, the testing, with what result?

Haven't done safe mode. What is the purpose of doing so?

The problem is persistently intermittent. ! That is, send/receive always
slows things down and only sometimes causes the program to freeze. And some
of the times it freezes, it is temporary and revives itself. Sometimes it
just freezes and needs to be killed.

If you boot the PC into safe mode to test, none of the background
applications/drivers will be running

Outlook safe mode and windows safe mode are two different things
If windows safe mode, boot normally, run msconfig, dissable all startups,
reboot accepting the prompt, and retest Outlook
If all OK, restart msconfig, re-enable a batch of startups, reboot accepting
the prompt & retest
Continue this process untill Outlook again baulks, you then know the cause
is in the last batch of startups you enabled, Its then a question of
ellimination on those batch of startups

Gotcha. Thanks. Out of curiosity, though, why does the problem not occur when
Outlook is in safe mode?

If you start Outlook with the safe switch it starts without Extensions,
reading Pane or toolbar customisation, if its OK then its generally a third
party comm addin causing the problem.
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/commandlines.htm

If started whilst win is in safe mode, then no third party apps are loaded
