Still, Random Blank slides

J

Jeffrey Falk

My new laptop with XP Pro and PPT 2003 still gives me random blank slides in
large complex PPS and Vox Proxy presentations. I upgraded the latest video
drivers, uninstalled the old and installed the new. Uninstalled and
Installed PPT 2003. Spoke with the Laptop Manufacturers tech support. I
still get some random blank slides. The only pattern I see is that
the slides that blank are a slightly different size 700kb vs 500kb. These
are all JPEG and it makes no difference on my other computers.
I would appreciate any other suggestions. Auto Play CD's of the Vox Proxy
presentation work just fine.

A 700kb JPG is actually quite large when decompressed. For that matter, a
500kb JPG is also large. You need to optimize your images. You can do this
using PPT 2003's built-in optimization feature. Go to View/Toolbars, choose
your Picture toolbar, then hover over each icon until you come to the one
for Compress Pictures.

I just tried that. I compressed all the slides in the presentation and I'm
still getting random blanks. This is making me nuts since the presentations
work just fine on older
machines.

I saw in your other thread that it was okay in PPS files, but not in PPV (or
whatever the vox proxy extension is). Is that correct?

Have you tried changing Hardware Acceleration settings?

Also, in PPT go to Help/Check for Updates and make sure you have any
Critical Patches installed.

Sometimes the PPS click on files work fine, but I periodically get 1-2
random blank slides. Since I installed new video drivers, the blank slides
are black rather than white. Vox Proxy is a PPT add on program that allows
for the placement of talking animated characters. The PPV file that is
creates is a click on file that runs PPT.

I'm still playing around with graphic acceleration. I uninstalled and
reinstalled PPT and did download and updates. With everything enabled on
full, I seem to be getting the best but not perfect results. Today, I'm
going back to the Manufacturers TEch support and attempt to set the ATI
graphics card properly as I believe this is causing the problem.

The Tech support at the manufacturer suggested I try some drivers written
by an individual that does this as a hobby. I downloaded the drivers and
they do improve the situation but do not make it foolproof. I'll write to
the author for some assistance. It's interesting to note that ATI really
does not appear to be interested in frequent upgrade of drivers for laptops.
All they seem to be concerned about are desktop machines. I guess that's
where there profits are.

I have the same problem with random blank slides in an otherwise
existing PPT presentation that played fine under PowePoint XP/2002 and
XP Home. I just cme across a Microsoft Knowledge Base article
(Q327809) that referenced Intel Hyperthreading on P4and programs
having the possibility of failure. I also just tested the same
presentation that fails on my non-HT laptop fitted out with XP Pro and
PPT 2003 and it works. Theory: PPT 2003 was not fully tested on a HT
platform under XP Pro where HT is enabled. Any comments? Any way to
check this theory out with Microsoft?
